Behave: “What You will Be and Have”

Our conduct and behavior is crucial in every area of our lives.  It is all about How You Behave!  Your behavior is a pattern of your actions, responses (internal and external), and your mannerisms.  Our behavior is our daily conduct.  What does your conduct say about you?

While researching the word conduct, I discovered a unique aspect of the word.  It means to manage oneself. To manage means to take charge or take care, and to dominate or influence.  Let’s break this down into two different aspects: you and everyone else. The “you” factor of management is how you take charge and take care of yourself.  Have you truly taken charge over your life?  It is time for you to take ownership of your life.  Be the one to make the decisions about your life; do not leave it to the opinion of a mortal man.

When was the last time you made a decision about your life and it was not dependent upon how it would affect everyone else?  If you are like me, then it has been awhile.  Yes, you are a husband/wife, dad/mom, co-worker, friend, and minister (the list could go on and on), but these are the roles of life. When we consider our behavior, we always do it in light of our roles.  We behave in such a way because it is what a “father/mother, minister, friend, and a man/woman of a certain age should behave or act like.”

Our behavior should be based on who we are, and not the roles of life.  You are not a Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde.  Yes, you are one person with multifaceted roles, but still one man/woman, who has been neglected and is now ready to be loosed.  Release him/her, so you can live a total life and not just many parts and roles.

Psalm 101:2-“I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.”

Behave: To act in a particular way; conduct or comport oneself: to act properly, to act or react under given circumstances.  To act, react, function, or perform in a particular way; to manage or govern in point of behavior, and to discipline, to handle, and to restrain.

Be: To exist or live; to take place, happen, and occur. To occupy a place or position; to continue, to exist in actuality, and to have life or reality.

Have: To possess, own, or hold for use; to contain, or accept in some relation; to get, receive, or take. To have a part in something, to experience, undergo, or endure as joy or pain. To engage in or carry on, to permit, allow, be in control, to know, understand, or be skilled in.

Psalm 101:2 (see above) tells us that we should conduct ourselves in wisdom, and in a “perfect” way.  The word perfect in this verse means to be complete.  The psalmist is essentially telling us that we should behave wisely and be complete in all of our ways.  The psalmist tells us that this behavior has to stem from the Heart!  The condition of the heart reveals our true behavior and intentions.  The intent of your heart leads you in all the ways of life.  Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).  The intent and motive of your heart is the launching pad for your behavior.  Your heart is the keepsake of your life.  If this is the place where the issues of life are kept, then you need to guard it. Guard your life by guarding your heart. We put security systems inside of our homes to protect our possessions, but we often do not set up any parameters to safeguard our hearts and our lives.

Dee Barnes’ Journey from Homosexuality to a Ministry of Hope

by Scott Tompkins

When Dee Barnes tells her story and dances to the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s “This is How It Feels to Be Free” the hearts of her listeners soar too.

Seeing her joy, few can imagine how this wife and mother of three from Atlanta, who was a recent speaker in U of N’s Introduction to Biblical Counseling School, once languished in sexual and relational brokenness. Dee tells her story to give others hope that they too can be free.

She is the chairman of Resurrection Life Ministries in Atlanta, working closely with former, YWAM Amsterdam leader, Pat Caven, who also speaks regularly in the Kona IBC School. Both are also involved with the nationwide ministry called Living Waters, which helps people who struggle with sex addiction, homosexuality and many other relational issues.

“First Chronicles 16:9 says to “tell of God’s marvelous works” and I am one of His marvelous works,” Dee says.

Her story mirrors that of many involved in a homosexual lifestyle: emotional detachment from mom in early childhood, molestation by a male neighbor, a sense of shame, followed by promiscuity and more pain.

“In college I got pregnant and aborted the baby,” Dee says. “After that my promiscuity got worse and worse. At age 21 I had my first lesbian relationship. It was with a friend who was married at the time. Her husband was gone a lot and our emotional dependency became sexual. Our relationship led to the breakup of their marriage.”

Through theses years she kept up “a good girl image” with family and friends but began going regularly to gay bars. “I was excited when I first went and met so many gay people.”

Dee began pursuing a woman who said she was a Christian, but was living a lesbian lifestyle. “She told me homosexuality was wrong, and I asked her how she knew that. She said it was in the Bible. Then she asked if I had a personal relationship with Jesus. I didn’t know. She said if I had one, I’d know it.”

Something began stirring in Dee’s heart, a desperate desire to be set free from the pain and bondage she felt. “I wanted out and asked God to whatever it takes.”

The next Sunday she found her way to a charismatic church where, after the sermon, the pastor called people to come forward if they wanted to “get right with God.”

“I didn’t want to go forward, but the Holy Spirit drew me there. Through tears I repented for the life I’d been living and asked Jesus into my life. That day it felt like 5,000 pounds lifted off my shoulders.”

Dee describes the next two years as a “honeymoon time with the Lord.” She left the gay lifestyle, began growing in faith and, to her great surprise, was pursued with relentless love by a wonderful man who became her husband. Later is became apparent that she still needed to deal with root issues that led to all the pain of her previous life. She contacted Pat Caven and husband, Mike, both of whom had come out of homosexuality themselves and were counselors for Resurrection Life Ministries. Dee began individual counseling and the six months healing program called Living Waters.

“Living Waters was a powerful tool God used to bring great healing in my life,” Dee says. “Jesus will set you free, but you have to be willing to let go of the lifestyle and face up to the root issues that took you there.”

One of Dee’s greatest joys is that her friend who first told her about life in Jesus has now fully embraces Him herself after 27 years in the gay lifestyle. Like Dee, she found freedom when she surrendered completely to Jesus! Living Waters helped her deal with the root issues that troubled her for so long. “God has not dealt with me as my sins deserve,” Dee says. “I don’t deserve a husband because I broke up a marriage. I don’t deserve a baby because I killed one. Yet God has given me a wonderful husband and three great kids. And more than that, He’s given me a life of joy and freedom I could never have imagined.”

Prayer of Thanksgiving & Gratitude

Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus, my Lord and my Savior. I come to You with a heart of humility, praise and thanksgiving. I thank you for all the good things in my life, for You are the Creator of all things good. Father.  I come to You in gratitude, in love, and through the precious Blood of Your Son Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your Word says that when I pray to You that You will hear me according to Job 22:27-28. Heavenly Father, Your word says that in every place I  go where Your Name is remembered, You will come to me  and bless me according to Your word in Exodus 20:24, and Your presence will go with me  wherever I  go and You will give me  rest according to Exodus 33:14.

I thank You for Your Presence. For in Your Presence is the fullness of my joy and in Your Presence I am complete and whole. In Your Presence I have purpose. Because of Your Presence, I am glad to be here. Thank You for the instruction and counsel that You will give me, and always keeping Your  eye upon me. Father, I thank You for Your plan, that I might have a full life and enjoy it and have it in abundance to overflowing. Father, I thank You for Your provision, that all my needs are met according to Your riches in glory and that I may prosper in all areas of my life as my soul prospers. Father, I thank You for Your protection, that Your perfect love casts out all fear and that no weapon formed against me shall prosper.

I  thank you that You continually guide me  and satisfy my  desires in dry and wilderness places that I find myself in, thank you Father for your Word that is strength to my  bones and I will be like a watered garden and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail, according to your Word.  Isaiah 58:11.  Heavenly Father, I thank you for destroying any evil that is coming against me, thank you for Your angels encamping about me and chariots of fire are all around me, my family, and those that I pray for. I thank You that I can come and hide myself in You in times of trouble, and a flood of great waters will not reach me.  I praise you for the songs of deliverance that You surround me with, that flow through my heart and my thoughts and lift me above my circumstances.  Father, I thank You for Your peace, The peace that passes all understanding.  The peace that keeps me calm and secure through adversity.  The peace that leads me through all the storms that come into my life.  Father, thank You for my life and Your Presence in it.

Heavenly Father, I  thank You that You put all things under the feet of Jesus, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Heavenly Father, I thank you that you have opened my eyes to see how great You are and how complete Your provision is for me, my family, and those that I pray for. .  I thank You that I am blessed, my transgressions are forgiven, and my sin is covered.   I thank You that the victory the Jesus won for me on the Cross and in His resurrection has been given to me and I am seated with the Lord Jesus in the heavenlies. Heavenly Father, by faith and in dependence upon You; I put off the fleshly works of the old man and stand unto all the victory of the crucifixion where the Lord Jesus provided cleansing from the old nature. I put on myself the new man and I stand into all the victory of the resurrection and the provisions that the Lord Jesus has made for me, my family, and those that I pray for.

Heavenly Father, I put off all forms of selfishness, self-centeredness, and grumbling, and put on myself the new nature of Jesus Christ with its love, praise, and gratitude. I put off all forms of fear and put the new nature of Jesus Christ with its courage. Lord, I thank you that I am able to stand in the victory of the ascension and glorification of the Lord Jesus, whereby all principalities and powers were made subject to Him. I claim our place in Jesus as victorious with Him  Heavenly Father, I thank You for keeping me watchful and praying at all times.  I decree and declare that will trust in You, Lord and Your lovingkindness will surround me.  I rejoice in You, I will be glad in You.  Heavenly Father, strengthen me in my inner man to do Your will and receive all of the blessings of the upright in heart.

I thank You that Jesus is able to do abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us. To Him be the glory in the church by Jesus Christ to all generations, forever and ever. Amen!
